மின்னஞ்சல் (Electronic Mail (a) Email) என்பது நமது தின வாழ்க்கையில் தவிர்க்க முடியாத ஒன்றாகிவிட்டது. மற்றவர்களுடன் வேகமாக தொடர்பு கொள்ள செலவில்லாத ஒரு தகவல் பரிமாற்ற சாதனமாக விளங்குகிறது.

துவக்கத்தில் மின்னஞ்சல் என்றால் அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்தது ஹாட்மெயில் தான். முதலில் துவங்கப்பட்ட மின்னஞ்சல் சேவையும் இது தான். இந்த மின்னஞ்சல் சேவையை இந்தியரான சபீர் பாட்டியா தனது நண்பர் ஜாக் ஸ்மித்துடன் துவங்கினார் (ஜூலை 4, 1996) என்பது நமக்கு பெருமையளிக்கும் விஷயம். தகவல்களை பகிர்ந்திட எளிமையாகவும் வேகமாகவும் இருந்ததால் அனைவரிடமும் விரைவில் வரவேற்ப்பை பெற்றது. இதனுடைய வளர்ச்சியைப் பார்த்து பிரபல மைக்ரோசாப்ட் நிறுவனம் இதை USD 400 மில்லியனுக்கு (டிசம்பர் 1997) வாங்கிக்கொண்டது!

ஹாட்மெயில் உடன் வந்த இன்னொரு மின்னஞ்சல் சேவை "ராக்கெட் மெயில்". இதுதான் பின்னாளில் "யாஹூ"வாக மாறியது. இன்று வரை மின்னஞ்சல் சேவையில் முன்னணியில் இருப்பது ஹாட்மெயில்... அடுத்தது யாஹூ. தொடர்ந்து ஜிமெயில் சேவை. நம்மிடையே தற்போது ஜிமெயில் பிரபலமாக இருந்தாலும் மின்னஞ்சல் ரேங்கிங்கில் மூன்றாவது இடத்திலேயே உள்ளது.

துவக்கத்தில் மிகக் குறைவான அளவிலேயே சேமிப்பு அளவு கொடுத்தார்கள். 2 MB அளவுக்குதான் இருந்தது. ஜிமெயில் 1 GB என்று அதிரடியாக இடம் கொடுத்த பிறகு அரண்டு போன மைக்ரோசாப்ட் யாஹூ நிறுவனங்கள், பின் தங்களின் அளவையும் அதிகரிக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்திற்கு தள்ளப்பட்டன. ஜிமெயில் வந்த பிறகு ஹாட்மெயில், யாஹூ மின்னஞ்சல்களுக்கு இறங்கு முகமாகவே உள்ளது. இன்று வரை பயனாளர்களை அதிகளவில் கொண்டு மின்னஞ்சல் சேவையில் முதல் இரண்டு இடங்களில் ஹாட்மெயில், யாஹூ இருந்தாலும் வளர்ச்சியின் அடிப்படையில் ஜிமெயில் முன்னணியில் உள்ளது.

இந்த நிலையில் ஃபேஸ்புக், ட்விட்டர் போன்ற சமூகத்தளங்கள் பிரபலமான பிறகு பலரும் தங்கள் தகவல்களை இதிலேயே பரிமாறிக் கொள்வதால் மின்னஞ்சல் பயன்பாடு குறைந்து வருவதாக பேசப்பட்டது. இதற்கு சிகரம் வைத்தது போல ஃபேஸ்புக் மின்னஞ்சல் சேவையை துவங்கியது இது 'Messaging Service' என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. ஃபேஸ்புக் மின்னஞ்சல் சேவை என்பது வழக்கமான மின்னஞ்சல் சேவை போல இல்லாமல் Email, IM, SMS ஆகியவற்றை உள்ளடக்கி அமைத்து இருந்தது. இது "Gmail Killer" என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால் எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டது போல எதுவும் நடக்காமல் புஸ்ஸாகிவிட்டது!

ஃபேஸ்புக் மின்னஞ்சல், ஜிமெயிலுக்கு எந்த பாதிப்பையும் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை. இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால் இப்படி ஒரு சேவை வந்தது என்றே பலருக்கு தெரியவில்லை.

இவை இப்படி இருந்தாலும் பலர் மின்னஞ்சலை பயன்படுத்தாமல் ஃபேஸ்புக் ட்விட்டரிலியே பேசிக்கொள்வது அதிகரித்துக் கொண்டு வருவது உண்மை. நீங்கள் அதிகம் சமூகத்தளங்கள் பயன்படுத்துபவராக இருந்தால் மின்னஞ்சலில் உங்கள் நண்பர்களை தொடர்பு கொள்வதை விட சமூகத்தளங்களில் தொடர்பு வைத்திருப்பதே அதிகமாக இருக்கும். யோசித்துப் பார்த்தீர்களென்றால் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் நீங்கள் அனுப்பும், பெறும் மின்னஞ்சல்களின் எண்ணிக்கை முன்பை காட்டிலும் இப்போது குறைந்திருக்கும். குழும மின்னஞ்சல்கள் (Group Mails), அறிவிப்பு மின்னஞ்சல்கள் போன்றவை இந்தக்கணக்கில் வராது.

மின்னஞ்சலில் இருப்பது போல சமூகத் தளங்களிலும் நமக்கு தேவையானவர்களை பிரித்து தகவல்களை தெரிவிக்க முடியும். அதாவது குறிப்பிட்ட நபர்களுக்கு மட்டும் நமது தகவலை தெரிவிக்க முடியும். சமூகத் தளங்களில் Bubble notification என்ற அற்புதமான வசதியின் மூலம் நம்மால் மின்னஞ்சலைப் பார்க்காமலே நமக்கு வந்திருக்கும் தகவலை உடனடியாக அறிய முடியும். இணைய தொலைபேசிகளில் Push notification என்ற முறையில் விரைவாக அறிய முடியும்.

ஃபேஸ்புக் சமீபத்தில் நமக்கு வரும் தகவல்கள் அறிவிப்பு முறையில் மின்னஞ்சல் முறையை மாற்றி Bubble notification முறையை ஊக்குவித்துள்ளது. நமக்கு மின்னஞ்சல் வேண்டும் என்றாலும் மாற்றிக்கொள்ளலாம். முன்பு நமக்கு வந்த தகவலை அறிய அனைவரும் மின்னஞ்சலையே ஃபேஸ்புக்கில் பயன்படுத்திக்கொண்டு இருந்தோம். தற்போது Bubble notification எளிதாக இருக்கிறது. அதோடு மின்னஞ்சல்களின் எண்ணிக்கையையும் குறைந்து விட்டது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. கூகுள் + ம் இதே முறையில் சிறப்பாக செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது.

@ சிம்பல் மூலம் நாம் விரும்பும் நபரின் பெயரை கொடுத்து உடனடியாக அவரது கவனத்தைப் பெற முடியும். இதைப்போல எளிதான வசதி இருக்கும் போது மின்னஞ்சல் அனுப்புவது எல்லாம் பழைய ஸ்டைல் ஆகிவிட்டது. இதை எளிதாக ஃபேஸ்புக் மற்றும் கூகுள் + ல் செய்ய முடியும் என்பதால் பெரும்பாலான ஃபேஸ்புக் மற்றும் கூகுள் + பயனாளர்கள் இந்த முறையையே பின்பற்றுகிறார்கள்.

எடுத்துக்காட்டாக ஒருவரைப் பற்றிய தகவலை ஃபேஸ்புக், கூகுள் + ல் பதிகிறோம் என்றால் நாம் @ <நண்பர் பெயர்> கொடுத்து உடனே அவரது கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கலாம் அதாவது "நான் உங்கள் தொடர்புள்ள செய்தியை இங்கே கூறி இருக்கிறேன் இங்கே வாருங்கள்" என்பதாகும். இதன் மூலம் அந்த நபர் உடனடியாக தன்னைப்பற்றிய தகவலுக்கு பதில் தர முடியும் அந்த செய்தியை தாமாக கவனிக்கும் வரை காத்திருக்கத் தேவையில்லை.

உலகளவில் அதிகம் பார்வையிடும் தளமாக தொடர்ந்து இரண்டாவது ஆண்டாக தன்னுடைய முதல் இடத்தை ஃபேஸ்புக் தக்க வைத்து இருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாகும். சமூகத்தளங்கள் வளர்ச்சியைக் கண்டு மிரண்ட கூகுள் இதன் காரணமாகத் தான் கூகுள் + சமூகத் தளத்தை துவங்கியது. எதிர்காலத்தில் சமூகத்தளங்கள் முக்கியப் பங்கு வகிக்கும் என்று அனைவரும் கூறுவதால் இதற்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்படுகிறது.

சமூகத்தளங்கள் மூலம் பல நாடுகளின் தலை எழுத்தே மாற்றி அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கிறது. இதற்கு உதாரணமாக துனீசியா, எகிப்து, லிபியா என்று கூறிக்கொண்டே போகலாம். இந்தியாவில் அன்னா ஹசாரே போராட்டத்திற்கு பெரிதும் துணையாக இருந்தது சமூகத் தளங்களே என்பதும் இங்கே குறிப்பிட வேண்டிய விசயமாகும்.

இது போல போராட்டங்களின் செய்தியை மக்களிடம் வேகமாக கொண்டு செல்ல பயன்பட்டவை சமூகத் தளங்களே! இதற்கு யாரும் மின்னஞ்சலை முக்கிய தகவல் பரிமாற்ற சாதனமாக பயன்படுத்தவில்லை என்பதை இங்கே நாம் உணர வேண்டும். பரபரப்பு செய்தி என்றால் ட்விட்டரில் காட்டுத்தீயாக சில நிமிடங்களில் உலகம் முழுவதும் பரவி விடுகிறது.

இன்னொரு முக்கியமான விஷயம் தற்போதைய தலைமுறையின் துவக்கமே சமூகத் தளங்களோடு உள்ளது அவர்கள் மின்னஞ்சலை குறைவாகவே பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பார்கள். இந்த நிலையில் எதிர் வரும் தலைமுறையினர் மின்னஞ்சல் என்ற வசதிக்கே போகாமல் சமூகத் தளங்களுக்கே முன்னுரிமை அளிப்பார்கள். இதனால் படிப்படியாக மின்னஞ்சல் பயன்பாடு குறைய அதிக வாய்ப்பு இருப்பதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது.

கடிதம்.. மொபைல்.. மின்னஞ்சல்... இனி சோஷியல் நெட்வொர்க்!

எளிமையாகக் கூற வேண்டும் என்றால் முன்பு கடிதம் பிரபலமாக இருந்தது. தற்போதைய தலைமுறையினர் நேராக மின்னஞ்சல், தொலைபேசிக்கு வந்து விட்டார்கள் அதாவது கடிதப் பயன்பாடு என்ற ஒன்றை தொடாமலே!

அதே போல அடுத்த தலைமுறையினர் மின்னனஞ்சலுக்கு செல்லாமலே நேராக சமூகத்தளங்களுக்கு வந்து விடுவார்கள். அவர்கள் மின்னஞ்சலை முக்கிய சேவையாக பயன்படுத்த வேண்டிய தேவையே இருக்காது அல்லது அவர்களுக்கு பயன்படுத்த அதிகம் வாய்ப்பு அமையாது.

இதனாலே நிபுணர்கள் மின்னஞ்சலுக்கு சிறப்பான எதிர்காலம் இல்லை என்கிறார்கள்.

'இல்ல இல்ல.... அவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் அழியாது'

எப்போதுமே எந்த ஒரு விஷயத்திற்கும் மாற்றுக்கருத்து நிச்சயம் இருக்கும். அப்படி மின்னஞ்சல் சமாச்சாரத்தில் மாற்றுக்கருத்து சிலவற்றை பார்ப்போம்.

நிறுவனங்கள் தங்கள் தகவல் பரிமாற்றத்திற்கு மின்னஞ்சலையே பயன்படுத்த முடியும். சமூகத்தளங்களை பயன்படுத்த முடியாது.

சமூகத் தளங்கள் சீனா போன்ற பல நாடுகளில் தடை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. சீனாவில் நீங்கள் ஃபேஸ்புக், ட்விட்டர் பயன்படுத்த முடியாது. இது போல சமயங்களில் நமக்கு அங்கே நண்பர்கள் இருந்தால் இதில் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முடியாது. இதற்கு மின்னஞ்சல்தான் மாற்று தகவல் பரிமாற்ற சாதனம்.

அலுவலகங்களில் சமூகத் தளங்களுக்கு தடை உள்ளது. எனவே இதில் தகவல்களை பார்க்க முடியாது. இதற்கு அந்த சமயங்களில் நமது இணைய தொலைபேசி போன்ற சில மாற்று வசதிகள் இருந்தாலும் உடனடி பயன்பாட்டிற்கு சிரமமாகவே இருக்கும்.

உலகில் இன்னும் பெரும்பான்மையானோர் மின்னஞ்சலையே பயன்படுத்துக்கிறார்கள். அதோடு நம் நண்பர்கள் அனைவரும் சமூகத்தளங்களில் உறுப்பினராக இருப்பார்கள் என்று கருத முடியாது.

நாம் செய்யும் சிறு தவறு கூட பெரிய அபாயத்தில் முடியலாம். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக சமீபத்தில் ஹாலிவுட் நடிகரான Charlie Sheen பிரபல பாடகரான Justine Bieber க்கு தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் தகவல் அனுப்பவதாக நினைத்து தனது தொலைபேசி எண்ணை அவரை ட்விட்டரில் பின் தொடரும் 5 மில்லியன் நபர்களுக்கும் அனுப்பி விட்டார்.

சமூகத் தளங்கள் மூலம் நாம் நண்பர்களுடன் எளிதாக தொடர்பு கொள்ளலாம். அதையே தொழில் அலுவலக பணி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நிலை என்று வரும் போது இதை பயன்படுத்துவது அவ்வளவு நாகரீகமாக இருக்காது. அது சில நேரங்களில் சாத்தியமும் இல்லை. இதைப்போல சமயங்களில் மின்னஞ்சலையே பயன்படுத்த வேண்டி இருக்கும்.

மேற்கூறிய தகவல்கள் அனைத்தும் சமீபமாக இணையம் முழுவதும் பரபரப்பாக பேசப்படும் விசயமாக உள்ளது. இது பற்றி எழுதாத தொழில்நுட்பத் தளங்களே இல்லை என்கிற அளவிற்கு இது பற்றி அனைவரும் பகிர்ந்து வருகிறார்கள். முடிவாக தகவல் பரிமாற்றத்துக்கு துவக்கத்தில் புறா, ஓலை அனுப்பினார்கள் பின் கடித முறை வந்தது. அது மெதுவாக உள்ளது என்று மின்னஞ்சல் பிரபலமானது. தற்போது அதுவும் மெதுவாக உள்ளது என்று சமூகத்தளங்களுக்கு மாறியுள்ளனர்... நாளை இதை விட வேகமாக இன்னொரு சேவை வரும். அப்போது... தலைப்பு மாறும். அவ்ளோதான்!!

DISCOVER MURUDESHWARA.This giant statue of Lord Shiva in Murudeshwara has been captured by Hariprasad, HIQ member from Bangalore.

Murudeshwara is a popular pilgrimage and beach destination located in the Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada District, in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Bounded by the Arabian Sea on its three sides and the rolling hills of the Western Ghats, the coastal town of Murudeshwara lies in between Honnavara and Bhatkal, on National Highway 17.

Murudeshwara town, earlier known by the name 'Mrideshwara', is named after the ancient Murudeshwara Temple of Lord Shiva. The ancient scriptures point to the existence of the town to the period of the Ramayana.

As per legend, the Demon King Ravana brought Atma - Linga or Mahabaleshwara Linga from Kailasa Parvata but it was placed in Gokarna by Lord Ganesha. Ravana, in great anger, flung the other parts of the idol such as the casket, the lid, the string around the lingam and the covering cloth of the idol to Sajjeshwara, Guneshwara or Gunavanthe, Dhareswara and Kanduka Hill of Mrideshwara respectively. The lid took the form of Vamdev Linga, the thread as Tatpurusha Linga and the cloth became Aghora Linga or Mridesa Linga.

Knowing about this incident from Lord Vayu, Lord Shiva, along with Goddess Parvathi and Lord Ganesha, visited these places and consecrated the lingas. He declared these lingas as his 'pancha-khshetras' and also that worshipping these idols can wash off the sins of the devotees and transcend them from the cyclical re-incarnation of the soul by attaining Moksha.

'Mrideshwara' was later renamed as 'Murudeshwara' after the construction of the temple atop Kanduka Hill. Murudeshwara Temple is the chief attraction of the place with its 123 feet tall idol of Neelkanta or Lord Shiva and 249 feet high entrance tower, the Raja Gopura. Apart from being a pilgrimage destination, Murudeshwara is also known for the 'Murudeshwara Fort' located in its vicinity, which was renovated by Tipu Sultan.

Murudeshwara has beaches and activities like swimming, snorkelling, boat rides, etc. Opportunities for trekking are available at Yana, towards the peaks of the Sahyadri ranges - Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara. From Murudeshwara excursions can be taken to destinations like Sirsi, Karwar, Gokarna, Kollur, Udupi, Mangalore, Dharmasthala, Subramanya, etc.

Murudeshwara is located at a distance of 165 km from Mangalore, on NH 17. This town is connected to other destinations by some trains on the Mumbai – Mangalore route. Bajpe Airport of Mangalore is the nearest airport to Murudeshwara. Murudeshwara can be easily accessed by road as it is well connected to all the destinations in Karnataka and neighbouring states. The best time to visit Murudeshwara is from November to February.

டெல்லி: மொபைல்போன்கள் வெளிப்படுத்தும் கதிர்வீச்சு அளவைக் கண்டிப்பாக குறிப்பிட வேண்டும் என்று டெல்லி மாநில அரசு உத்தரவிட உள்ளதாக தகவல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.

Wikipedia editors question blackout

NEW YORK, January 18, 2012

Can the world live without Wikipedia for a day? The shutdown of one of the Internet's most-visited sites is not sitting well with some of its volunteer editors, who say the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.

"My main concern is that it puts the organisation in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said editor Robert Lawton, a Michigan computer consultant who would prefer that the encyclopaedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge. "Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."

Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday (10.30 a.m. IST, Wednesday) and the organisation said it would stay down for 24 hours.

Instead of encyclopaedia articles, visitors to the site saw a stark black-and-white page with the message- "Imagine a world without free knowledge." It carried a link to information about the two congressional bills and details about how to reach legislators.

It is the first time the English site has been blacked out. Wikipedia's Italian site came down once briefly in protest to an Internet censorship bill put forward by the Berlusconi government. The bill did not advance.

The shutdown adds to a growing body of critics who are speaking out against the legislation. But some editors are so uneasy with the move that they have blacked out their own user profile pages or resigned their administrative rights on the site to protest. Some likened the site's decision to fighting censorship with censorship.

One of the site's own "five pillars" of conduct says that Wikipedia "is written from a neutral point of view." The site strives to "avoid advocacy, and we characterise information and issues rather than debate them."

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales argues that the site can maintain neutrality in content even as it takes public positions on issues.

"The encyclopaedia will always be neutral. The community need not be, not when the encyclopaedia is threatened," he tweeted.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which administers the site, announced the blackout late Monday, after polling its community of volunteer contributors and editors and getting responses from 1,800 of them. The protest is aimed at the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate.

"If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the foundation said.

Both bills are designed to crack down on sales of pirated American products overseas, and they have the support of the film and music industry. Among the opponents are many Internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, eBay and AOL. They say the bills would hurt the industry and infringe on free-speech rights.

Social news website Reddit.com is shutting down for 12 hours on Wednesday, but most companies are staying up. Google said it will display its opposition to the bill on its home page in some fashion.

Dick Costollo, CEO of Twitter, said he opposes the legislation as well, but shutting down the service was out of the question.

"Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish," Mr. Costollo tweeted.

Since Wikimedia depends on a small army of volunteers who create and update articles, it's particularly concerned about a lack of exemptions in the bills for sites where users might contribute copyrighted content. Today, it has no obligation under U.S. law except removing that content if a copyright holder complains. But under the House version of the bill, it could be shut down unless it polices its own pages.

The plans for the protest were moving forward even though the bill's prospects appeared to be dimming. On Saturday, Representative Darrell Issa, a California Democrat, said the bill would not move to the House floor for a vote unless consensus is reached. However, Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, said work on the bill would resume next month.

The White House raised concerns over the weekend, pledging to work with Congress to battle piracy and counterfeiting while defending free expression, privacy and innovation in the Internet. The administration signalled it might use its veto power, if necessary.

That the bill seems unlikely to pass is another reason Lawton opposes the blackout.

"I think there are far more important things for the organization to focus aside from legislation that isn't likely to pass anyway," he said. He's been contributing to Wikipedia for eight years.

Danny Chia, another contributor to the site, said he had mixed feelings about the blackout. The neutrality applies to the content, but a lot of people interpret it as being about the site as a whole, said the Los Altos, California, software engineer.

In an online discussion, others raised the same point about the blackout: Appearances matter, and if the audience sees Wikipedia taking a stand, it might not believe the articles are objective, either.

Wikipedia has seen a small decline in participation, from a peak of 100,000 active editors a year ago to about 90,000 now. Wikimedia Foundation blames this mainly on outdated editing tools, and believes it can get the number growing again with software upgrades.

Chennai/New Delhi: If you have been receiving missed calls from international numbers, think twice before calling back, says telecom operator Vodafone. The operator has been witnessing cases wherein people get missed calls from international numbers and when the user calls back they are charged a huge sum for the call. A Vodafone representative said people in Uttar Pradesh were getting such calls yesterday and today people in Tamil Nadu are receiving these unsolicited calls on mobile phones. Vodafone said it is investigating the matter.

"Some Vodafone customers in Tamil Nadu have been receiving missed calls from international numbers lately. We would like to inform all our customers in Tamil Nadu that this issue has been brought to our notice and we are currently investigating the same," Vodafone India said in a statement. The company has also asked its over 140 million subscribers in the country to ignore such calls.

"We would like to urge our customers to kindly ignore such calls and not call back on those numbers. In case a customer gets such a call, we request them to call the customer care and report the number to us," it said. "We want to assure our customers that security is our highest priority. Vodafone takes the safety and security very seriously and we have invested considerable resources to continually evolve our system and improve security," the statement added.

Karaikal, Dec 6 (PTI): Southern Railway has commenced a three day speed trial run in the newly constructed Karaikal-Nagore broad gauge section.

Around 10:45 AM yesterday morning, an engine alone reached Karaikal from Nagore and returned. Later, the engine connected with a few bogies was run between Nagore- Karaikal and back.

The speed trial run will conclude tomorrow. The 11-km long line has two railway stations, seven major bridges, 40 minor bridges and 12 level-crossings and is awaiting safety inspection for commencing passenger traffic.

People of the area expect the Railways to commence train service before Sanipeyarchi festival scheduled on Dec 21. PTI COR APR

RECENTLY IN KARAIKAL

Officials of Karaikal port, the private port sandwiched between the major ports of Chennai and Tuticorin, are hoping that users from the industrial belts of Tamil Nadu will find their port more attractive to do business given its location advantage. This private port, located in the Union Territory of Puducherry, can serve nearby industrial belts such as Erode, Salem, Tiruppur and Trichy.

Infrastructure and real estate player Marg Ltd is developing the Karaikal port. According to Mr G.R.K. Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Marg, the nearby industrial towns would be able to cut short their transportation by at least 150 km if they use the Karaikal port instead of the ports in Chennai and Tuticorin.

"Customers can overall save up to Rs 700 per tonne by using the Karaikal port over the neighbouring ports," he said. "There will be an average saving of about Rs 300 per tonne on transportation alone if one considers the (distance) differential of 150 km between Karaikal port and the other two ports."

Besides, port efficiencies such as lower holding time of just about a day compared with 4-5 days of typical holding time in other ports, and stock variation of less than the standard norm of 1 per cent add to the cost savings of customers, said Mr Reddy.

Second phase

The port, which is currently operating two berths for coal and general cargo such as cement and fertiliser will have five more berths ready by October.

This is part of the second phase of its expansion — costing Rs 1,569 crore — to create a capacity of 21 million tonnes of cargo per annum. Dredging of the harbour basin, along with construction of berths, is in full swing at the port. While the port's draft will be increased to 16.5 m, the breakwater will be extended and the channel and turning circle will be widened to handle large vessels.

The new berths will handle liquid and general cargo. Mr Reddy hopes to clock 17 million tonnes of cargo by FY-13, after the second phase of expansion. After the third and final phase, which is expected to be completed by FY-17, the port is envisaged to have nine berths capable of handling 47 MTPA. The port will be capable of handling all types of cargo such as dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and containerised cargo in independent zones, he said. Karaikal Port had a year ago entered in to an agreement with Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) to allow the latter to put up a pipeline linking the port to the company's pipeline.

CPCL has a captive terminal at Nagapattinam to import crude and export refined products. They have a jetty, which is about 1 km into the sea. The refinery has been operating below capacity for want of crude oil. With this agreement, CPCL will be able to increase its capacity by bringing crude oil from the Krishna-Godavari basin.

The pipeline link, according to Mr Reddy, has got environment clearance to be laid across the Vettar river and the project can be expected to be completed by June 2011.

On apprehensions of local people about the environmental impact of laying the pipeline across the river, a port official said as the pipeline will be laid deep under the river bed, there was no cause of worry. This was also conveyed to the people of the locality, which has a small fishing harbour.

Nagore-Karaikal connection

According to Mr Reddy, Karaikal port could also see increased volumes once Karaikal city is linked by rail to Nagore. The port is currently linked to Nagore, which is about 3 km away.

The rail link between Karaikal City and Nagore is being developed by Southern Railway. This link will connect Karaikal port with the cement, steel, chemical, aluminium, textile and other major manufacturing industries in Ariyalur, Trichy and Salem districts and the upcoming industrial nodes around Mayiladuthurai, enabling heavy freight movement in the near future.

While there is a link from the port to the south, the new link will connect the northern belt. This link will pass just outside the port boundary where a set of three railway sidings are operational, said a port official.

The capital and other Telangana districts including Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts have high incidence of kidney stone cases compared to other parts. In fact, among doctors, the region has earned the sobriquet 'stone belt' due to high incidence of kidney stone cases.

Physicians argue that this unique pattern is due to the typical tropical climatic conditions prevalent in the region. And despite high incidence, awareness levels on treatment and preventive steps are less among public. "Public have to take simple measures to easily manage and avoid such a condition. Spreading awareness is important," feels associate professor, Nephrology Department, NIMS, Dr. R. Ram.

Kidney stones are formed when urine contains too much of substances like calcium and oxalates. These substances combine to form crystals in kidneys. The small crystals, over a period of time, will form kidney stones, leading to complications like blocking the flow of urine from kidneys.

The common symptoms of kidney stones include sudden severe pain in the groin and abdomen area, change in the urine colour and even blood in urine. "Kidney stone patients should have strict control of diet. Public will have to make sure that they take adequate amount of water daily," Dr. Ram Suggests.

Roughly, per day, physicians suggest, public should take more than one litre of water to keep the body hydrated and kidney stones at bay. Doctors also assert that food items, having high concentration of oxalates, must be avoided because they mix with calcium to form crystals.

Foods like spinach, cabbage and tomato are rich in oxalates and they should be avoided by patients. General public should make sure that the urine colour is always white, advises senior Nephrologist, Dr. Pradeeep Deshpande.

On most occasions, small kidney stones will pass through urine. "Stones of less than one cm usually pass through urine.

For bigger size stones, simple procedures like shock waves to break the stones are employed and for even bigger stones, endoscopy is performed.

The bottom line is public should drink water adequately," suggests Dr. Ram.

Samsung has issued a warning about the health risks of watching 3D television.

Samsung has warned elderly people, children and pregnant women to exercise caution when watching 3D TV

The world's largest electronics firm has highlighted potential dangers the technology poses to pregnant women, the elderly, children and people with serious medical conditions.

The Korean manufacturer, whose 3D sets will hit British stores in the coming days, warned of an array of side effects viewers could suffer.

The devices could trigger epileptic fits or cause ailments ranging from altered vision and dizziness to nausea, cramps, convulsions and involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching, it said.

Those who have been deprived of sleep or who have been drinking alcohol are also advised to avoid watching 3D television.

The scale of the warning threatens to overshadow the launch of 3D, which has been billed as the future for television by manufacturers and broadcasters.

The technology has been given a boost by 3D blockbuster films such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland and is being pushed by Sky for enhancing its football coverage.

To view television in 3D, users wear special glasses which bombard the eyes and brain with a succession of flashing images that appear for a fraction of a second.

However, the technology puts unusual strain on the body, hence Samsung has advised viewers to take regular breaks to prevent suffering side effects.

Samsung's statement, posted on its website, says: "Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images.

"Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games. If you suffer from, or have a family history of epilepsy or strokes, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function.

"Even those without a personal or family history of epilepsy or stroke may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause photosensitive epileptic seizures.

"Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilising the unit's 3D functionality.

"Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability. It is recommended that users take frequent breaks to lessen the potential of these effects.

"If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided."

"Watching TV while wearing 3D glasses for an extended period of time may cause a headache or fatigue. If you experience a headache, fatigue or dizziness, stop viewing TV and rest."

A different Tintin

Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" has failed to cheer the vast legions of Tintin fans the world over.

Inspectors Thompson and Thomson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) and Tintin (Jamie Bell) in "The Adentures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn".

AS reviews of Tintin's newest filmic rendition pour in, it is clear that Steven Spielberg's 3D version, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, has failed to cheer the vast legion of Tintin fans the world over. Estimates may vary, but more than 350 million comic books of Tintin have been sold to date, proving the series' lasting popularity. While responses to the film have been mixed, the disappointment is great when one pits Spielberg's "motion capture animation" against the original "straight line" drawing that Hergé used for the Tintin comic books. The disappointment is even more intense for those Tintin fans who went seeking their childhood hero whose fantastic exploits continue to fascinate them even when they are grown up.

In his review, Baradwaj Rangan, the film critic of The Hindu, writes: "In short, The Adventures of Tintin, with the hero and his cohorts on the trail of treasure from a sunken vessel, could just as easily have become an Indiana Jones movie: Raiders of the Lost Barque. And it has. This is more Spielberg's Tintin than Hergé's." Reviewing the film for www.rediff.com, Raja Sen writes: "If I'd never read or loved or heard of Tintin before, I admittedly would not have been thus outraged (though I see no point in pretending to be ignorant or American) but even if Spielberg's film was called The Adventures Of JackJack, it would be a forgettable standard-issue action romp. A few colourful characters, some visually lush backdrops, some ha-ha gags. Nothing offensively bad, but nothing special. But it is not called JackJack, and robbing Tintin of being special is as offensive as it gets."

This dismay with the filmic version is also a time to go back and understand Tintin better and to get a stronger sense of what made the boy reporter such a perennial hit. From the time the early Tintin stories began to be serialised in Le Petit Vingtième, a Belgian newspaper, the adventure comics became popular all over the world. Of the 24 graphic tales of Tintin that were produced, 21 are popular and are easily available across most bookstores in India. All the comics have been translated into several languages internationally, including Bengali and Hindi.

Hergé, a Belgian working in Brussels whose real name was Georges Remi, started working on the Tintin comic series in 1929. His first two works, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets (1930) and Tintin in the Congo (1931), bring out the world view of the young Hergé (he was 21 years old in 1929) and stand apart from his later works in their rawness. Even the style would surprise those who are used to his later works.

These two works also easily invite criticism from contemporary readers – the plots are shaky, the characterisation is incomplete and colonial and anti-communist prejudices are liberally present. The Congolese are depicted as backward people who need the patronage of the "fatherland", Belgium (Congo was a Belgian colony at the time). But these works set out the premise and the main idea behind Tintin: he is a boy reporter with a quiff, who is gutsy and adventurous. He is a journalist and his faithful companion is a white fox terrier called Snowy. Almost asexual, he remains the intrepid fantasy of a young boy, with his masterly ability to crack cases and his resilient resistance of the most devious of dons.

The short-book length comics that Tintin readers are used to begin with Tintin's third adventure – Tintin in America (1932) – when the young reporter arrives in Chicago during the time of organised crime and the Great Depression. Hergé's meticulous research was becoming evident now as he creates the underworld of Chicago. Al Capone, the legendary gangster, also features in this comic album.

Tintin continuously travels across the globe in his subsequent adventures. Advances in intercontinental transportation by the early decades of the 20th century obviously make Tintin's job a lot easier. (It is ironic that Hergé himself never travelled to all the lands that he so vividly illustrates in his comics. It was only later, after the publication of several Tintin albums, that he sets out to see the world.)

After every adventure, Tintin returns to Brussels where he lives at 26 Labrador Road (in his later adventures one can also see Tintin living and working out of Marlinspike Hall) before setting out for his globe-trotting adventures. America is followed by Egypt and India in Cigars of the Pharoah (1934). India, of course, is depicted as a country of thick forests, fakirs and rajahs. Hergé followed this adventure with Tintin and the Blue Lotus (1936), which is set in China.

With an awareness of the work of scholars such as Edward Said, who published his seminal work Orientalism in 1978, it is easier to understand the early work of Hergé. The author of Tintin was demonstrating the paradigm of his time in the way in which he understood the world outside Europe. The 1930s was a time of relative peace, considering that the Second World War was yet to envelope Europe, and epoch-changing ideas were still being discussed and formulated.

Hergé wrote Tintin's adventure in China during that period, and we see a clear change in his depiction of the "Other". While he persists with insulting caricatures, he also meets a young Chinese man who helps him correct his oriental prejudices. We see a vast change in his work from then on even though he persists with some of his zealous caricaturing – of Jews, for instance, inviting allegations that he was anti-Semitic.

The Chinese man whom he met would refigure in one of Hergé's most liked works – Tintin in Tibet (1960). Hergé wrote this work when he was going through a traumatic period in his life and set it in snow so that it would reflect his current mental state. India also figures fleetingly in this volume. When Tintin and Captain Haddock travel to Kathmandu on their way to Tibet, they have an encounter with a "sacred cow" in a medieval-looking bazaar in New Delhi.

The mention of Captain Haddock should merit a slight digression into the supporting cast who accompany Tintin on several of his adventures. There is Captain Archibald Haddock, whom Tintin first meets in his ninth adventure – The Crab With the Golden Claws (1941) – and continues as Tintin's constant companion in his subsequent tales. Two bumbling detectives – Thompson and Thomson – are a constant source of comedy and slapstick humour. An almost deaf scientist, Professor Cuthbert Calculus whom Tintin first encounters in his 12th adventure – Red Rackham's Treasure (1944) – also adds to the general chaos at times.

A host of other characters fleet in and out of the graphic tales: there is the Milanese nightingale, Bianca Castafiore; the typical South American caudillo, General Alcazar; and the well-natured but annoying insurance salesman, Jolyon Wagg. There are several Tintinologists (an informal term for people who study Tintin) who argue that Tintin is indeed great literature. One has only to look at the suspense-filled The Castafiore Emerald (1963) to see this.

Tom McCarthy, the British novelist, is one person who has argued strongly that Tintin indeed qualifies as literature, and of great quality at that. In his book Tintin and the Secret of Literature, he "shows the themes Tintin's stories generate are the same that have fuelled and troubled writers from the classical era to the present day". His conclusion is that Tintin's ultimate secret is that of literature itself.

Other studies by Tintin aficionados, such as Michael Farr, have tried to pick the stories apart in trying to interpret the themes by placing them in the context of Hergé's life. Others, such as Jean-Marie Apostolides, have used their training in the social sciences to argue that Tintin was Hergé's notion of a "superchild". But for most Tintin fans these arcane analyses do not hold too much meaning. It is Hergé's world that they turn to when they need to enjoy a great story well told.

Tintin's world is also reassuring for all those who are dismayed by the homogeneity that globalisation brings in its wake. Tintin's world is modern, and sometimes flawed if seen in the politically correct eyes of our time, but it retains a childish fascination even after several decades.

All of this should provide an idea of what Tintin means to many of his fans. Spielberg's film takes too many liberties and strays far away when it tries to bring incidents from three of the volumes together.

So while there are some scenes that are true to the comic book panels, Spielberg's distinctive touch mars the experience. The well-known director discovered Tintin only as an adult when a review compared the Indiana Jones character to Tintin. If he had discovered him as a child, perhaps he would have remembered that there are some childhood memories that need to retain their innocence and that when they are retold in 3D they lose their novelty and become impure. That is exactly what has happened with Spielberg's Tintin.

Can ELECTRICITY pass through Flash light of the Digital camera to your body??? Yes it is 100% true..!

This is a true incidence reported of a boy aged 19, who was studying in 1st year of engineering, who died in Keshvani Hospital, Mumbai. He was admitted in the Hospital as a burned patient. Reason ??????

This boy had gone to Amravati (a place located in State of Maharashtra ) on a study tour, on their return they were waiting at the railway station to catch the train.

Many of them started taking pictures of their friends using "Mobile Phones" and / or "Digital Camera". One of them complained that, he was unable to capture the full group of friends in one frame in the Digicam.

This boy moved away to a distance to get the whole group.

He failed to notice that at an angle above his head, 40,000 volts electrical line was passing through.

As soon as he clicked the digital camera? 40,000 volt current passed through the camera flash light to his camera and then from his camera to his fingers & to his body. All this happened within a fraction of a second. His body was half burned.

They arranged for an ambulance & his burned body was brought to Keshavani Hospital, Mumbai.

For one & half days or so he was conscious & talking. Doctors did not have much hopes as there was a lot of complex issues in his body. He passed away later.

Now how many of us are aware about these technical threats & dangers? Even if we are, how many of us are adhering??

Now should we call ourselves as educated and knowledgeable people?

Do you know that there is an expiry date (physical life) for LPG cylinders?

Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents.

In this regard, please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the vendor.

Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:

On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -

1. A for March (First Qtr),

2. B for June (Second Qtr),

3. C for Sept (Third Qtr),

4. D for December (Fourth Qtr).

The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.

Please Return Back the Cylinder that you get with a Expiry Date, they are prone to Leak and other Hazardous accidents...

The second example with D13 allows the cylinder to be in use Up to Dec 2013.

New Delhi, Nov 29: Pipping past the four metro cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, the southern technology hub Bangalore has emerged as the best city to live in India, a global survey said today.

Despite its top Indian ranking, Bangalore's worldwide rank is very low at 141st position in a list of 221 cities globally in terms of standard of living, compiled by the 'Quality of Living Survey - Worldwide Rankings, 2011' by the global HR (human resources) consultancy major Mercer.

Vienna has been ranked as the world's best city to live in on the global list, which has five Indian cities -- Bangalore (141st), New Delhi (143rd), Mumbai (144th), Chennai (150th) and Kolkata (151st).

Globally, Vienna is followed by Zurich, Auckland, Munich, Dusseldorf, Vancouver, Frankfurt, Geneva, Copenhagen and Bern among the top-ranked cities in terms of quality of living, Mercer said.

In another list of the world's best cities in terms of personal safety standards, Luxembourg has been placed on the top, followed by Bern, Helsinki, Zurich, Vienna, Geneva and Stockholm.

On this list, Indian cities have been ranked a little better, as Bangalore has got 117th place, New Delhi and Kolkata shared the 127th position, Mumbai is at 142 and Chennai is placed at 108th.

Bangalore has been ranked as the best Indian city both in terms of quality of living and the personal safety standards.

The personal safety ranking has been on measures of internal stability, crime levels, law enforcement effectiveness and host-country's international relations.

नयी दिल्ली। दिल्ली, मुंबई, कोलकाता और चेन्नई जैसे चार महानगरों को पीछे छोड़ते हुए दक्षिण भारत का बेंगलूर शहर देश में रहने के लिहाज से सर्वश्रेष्ठ शहर के रूप में उभरा है। एक वैश्विक सर्वेक्षण में यह तथ्य सामने आया है। वैश्विक एचआर सलाहकार कंपनी मर्सर के सर्वेक्षण क्वालिटी आफ लिविंग सर्वे-वर्ल्‍डवाइड रैंकिंग 2011 के अनुसार बेशक बेंगलूर देश का रहने के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ शहर है, पर वैश्विक स्तर पर 221 शहरों की सूची में यह काफी नीचे यानी 141वें पायदान पर है।

सर्वेक्षण में वियना को रहने के लिए दुनिया का सबसे बेहतरीन शहर करार दिया गया है। इस सूची में 5 भारतीय शहर बेंगलूर (141), नयी दिल्ली (143), मुंबई (144), चेन्नई (150) और कोलकाता (151) शामिल हैं। वैश्विक स्तर पर वियना के बाद सूची में ज्यूरिख,ऑकलैंड, म्यूनिख, डसलडोर्फ, वैंकुवर, फै्रंकफर्ट, जिनीवा, कोपनहेगन और बर्न आता है।
