All about Dr. Abdul Kalam

1. Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam - அவுல் பக்கிர் ஜைனுலாபுதீன் அப்துல் கலாம்
2. Born on: 15 October 1931 at Rameswaram, Ramnad (now Age: 85 years, 1 day)
3. Parents: Jainulabudeen and Ashiamma
4. Died on: 27 July 2015 (aged 83) at Shillong, Meghalaya
5. Kalam was the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family
6. School education at: Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram
7. He graduated B.Sc., (Physics) at St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, Affiliated with the University of Madras
8. Then he studied Aerospace Engineering in MIT namely Madras Institute of Technology
9. In an exclusive interview to The Hindu on the occasion of ‘Teachers Day’ on September 5, 2013, the former President said: “If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me”
10. “All birds find shelter during a rain. But the eagle avoids rain by flying above the clouds.”
11. He donated his Presidential Salary to Charity: PURA – Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas
12. He refused to sit on Special Chairs at Events
13. He was a champion of wildlife and nature: while working in DRDO he rejected to place broken glass on the walls to save birds that perch on the walls

15. Though he is a Muslim by birth but he likes to read both Bhagvad Gita and Quran
16. Kalam’s visit to Switzerland is commemorated as Science Day in the country. (26th of May, 2005)
17. In the year 2010, UNO on his 79th birth anniversary had declared his birthday as the ‘World Students' Day’
18. Wheeler Island, a national missile test site in Odisha, was renamed Abdul Kalam Island in September 2015
19. In Tamil Nadu his birthday is celebrated as "Youth Renaissance Day - இளைஞர் மறுமலர்ச்சி நாள்" and also conferring “Abdul Kalam Award” on I-Day to the distinguished service rendered persons which constituting an 8-gram gold medal, a certificate and Cash ₹5,00,000 (US $7,400)
