DAMAGES DUE TO THANE CYCLONE 2011
Consequent to receipt of a warning message from the Meterological Department and directions of the Government, the distribution of power supply in the Puducherry region was switched off as a precautionary measure on the night of 29-12-2011. However power supply to the 230 KV and 110 KV Sub-Stations were maintained for operational purposes.
In the meanwhile, the THANE cyclone crossed the Puducherry coast in the morning hours of 30-12-2011 at a speed of 130 KMPH and extensive damages were caused to the transmission and distribution power system in the Puducherry region.
Due to heavy wind, both the Neyveli-Villianur and Neyveli-Bahour 230 KV lines got tripped.
The 230 KV power supply from the Ramanathapuram 400 KV Sub-Station also got tripped due to severe fault in the transmission system.
Thus power supply to the entire Puducherry region was disrupted.
The estimated damages to the transmission and distribution power system has been assessed at Rs. 49.25 Crores.
